Brother and sister team, Shannon Loo and Chanzen Loo-Carroll are the founders of Mise Kimono, a Maui-based business created to celebrate and perpetuate the legacy of their maternal Japanese Grandmother, Tomiko Mise.

According to Shannon, “Coming to America post WWII was not an easy life, but it did not change Grandma Tomiko’s quirky, crazy personality nor did it dampen her wild, rebellious spirit. Grandma was always proud of who she was and was never ashamed of where she came from. Even after two children, three grandchildren and one great grandchild later she was still the same punchy Tomiko-san from Ozu City, Ehime, Japan.”

Today, Mise Kimono products are designed to embody the eccentric spirit of Grandma Tomiko, as well as the family she left behind in Japan – two brothers and four sisters whom still reside there.

99% of Mise Kimono branded apparel, handbags, and accessories is handcrafted right in their shop, in front of your eyes. The dynamic brother-sister duo only use imported Japanese fabrics – new cotton prints, Vintage Kimono and Obi fabrics; and they and their assistant Jonah Valois-Nishimura have an extensive knowledge of kimono wearing for purchasing customers. They also collaborate with other local small businesses to create one-of-a-kind products for their shop.

Shannon is humbled to be a part of the Japanese dance community here on Maui where there are so many people who appreciate the traditions of Japanese culture of which Mise Kimono was founded.
